American artist Carmen Winant works with textual and photographic material to highlight and question traditional, patriarchal images of women and gender constructs. Sourcing her material from media archives, Winant points to the defining role of the medium of photography in constructing narratives of history and identity.
FOTO WIEN has invited the artist to create a work for the exterior façade of the Atelier Augarten, i.e. the festival headquarter. To this end, Winant searched through historical and feminist archives for photographs of protests by the international women’s movement.
With her work, the artist reclaims the feminist agenda, taking it out of the archives and back into the public sphere. Sadly, the feminists’ historical demands have lost none of their topicality, given the current tightening of abortion laws and the protests by women in various countries around the world against such stringent measures, not to mention how women globally are discriminated against in terms of education, work and rights.
