FOTO WIEN 2023

For an entire month, Austria’s largest biennial photography festival transforms Vienna into a lively stage for the medium of photography. Museums, galleries, academies, and project spaces invite visitors to explore the wide range of photographic images on display.

During OPENING DAYS from October 4 to 5, 2025, the festival headquarters at FOTO ARSENAL WIEN will offer an exciting program of talks, panel discussions, workshops, and the photobook fair BOOK DAYS. Under the motto “dynamic futures,” FOTO WIEN 2025 highlights the role of photography as a window into the future.

dynamic futures

The main theme of FOTO WIEN 2025 is dynamic futures, an exploration of speculative future scenarios that address the impact of scientific and technological progress on society as seen through the lens of photography.

What visions of the future are revealed in historical and contemporary images of science and art? How do photography and post-digital technologies influence the way we imagine our future? What ethical and sociopolitical questions do digital and algorithmic images pose?

As a transdisciplinary testing ground between art, science, and technology, FOTO WIEN 2025 examines photography as a window to the future and offers a rich program of exhibitions, panels, artist talks, workshops and many more from October 3 to November 2, 2025.

Partner Network: Vienna Is Part of EMOP

The European Month of Photography, or EMOP for short, is an association of various photography festivals in European capitals. Founded 2004 by Maison Europenée de la Photographie (MEP) in Paris together with the cities of Berlin and Vienna, new network partners have joined the organisation ever since like Athens, Bratislava, Brussels, Budapest, Lisbon, Ljubljana, Luxembourg, Moscow and Rome.

Currently the cities Berlin, Brussels, Lisbon, Luxembourg and Vienna are working together. What all partners have in common is that each participating European capital organises a photo festival in its city either annually or biennially.

The European EMOP Network stands for strengthening photo festival culture that has continued to establish itself over many years – and making it visible. It points beyond its own borders and shows that more and more spaces are being established for photography – the decisive image medium of our present time – in which the social and artistic uses of the medium of photography are constantly being highlighted and negotiated anew.

At the centre of the European Network is the exchange about historical and contemporary artistic photography, the support of young international artists and to visualize the medium of photography in exhibitions and other mediation formats.

Festivals of the EMOP Network

The following European Photo Festivals are currently active members of the EMOP Network:

EMOPLUX (Luxembourg)
EMOP BERLIN – EUROPEAN MONTH OF PHOTOGRAPHY (Berlin)
FOTO WIEN (Vienna)
IMAGO LISBOA (Lisbon)
PHOTO BRUSSELS (Brussels)

FOTO ARSENAL WIEN Images for all

FOTO ARSENAL WIEN is Austria’s new center for photography and lens-based media.

Opened by the City of Vienna in March 2025, the institution presents and promotes contemporary photography in all its forms and applications. As a hub for photography and lens-based media in Austria, the institution brings together historical and international topics at the interface between analog and digital worlds as well as between static and moving images.

Across roughly 1,000 m² of exhibition space, up to twelve exhibitions per year showcase the full breadth of the photographic medium—a combination of young talents, still-to-be-discovered photographers, and internationally known artists.

The Activities department not only offers a wide-ranging educational program with workshops for children, young people, and adults, but also forms the institution’s second core pillar. Dedicated seminar rooms and an analog darkroom have been established for this purpose.

Since 2023 it has been responsible for the FOTO WIEN festival, and starting in 2025 it will be responsible for the Festival Vienna Digital Cultures with the Kunsthalle Wien.
