Future Retrofuturism
Exhibition
KOI Wiedner Hauptstraße 40, 1040 Wien
3.—30.10.2025
Artists: Micheli Sissa, Müller Andreas
The works in the exhibition Future Retrofuturism engage with a metaphysical reality. As in the Baroque, the world—specifically the world staged through photography—becomes a stage for various artistic models, all of which carry at their core the principle of transformation.
While Sissa Micheli’s often fleeting photographs are infused with the idea of metamorphosis in all its variations, as well as the dissolution of identity, Andreas Müller’s work centers on the inner recognition of a “world behind the world.” Humanity, as a mutable being, embodies a utopian potential that finds expression in the artists’ otherworldly images.
Here, the focus is less on the extent of technology embedded in art, and more on the art that has always been contained within téchnē. This negative definition manifests in aesthetic means that address not only the visible image but also its omissions: they are marked by negated spatial depth and the absence of cast shadows. The iconically conceived images articulate a vision of human existence that, like the works themselves, moves between calculation and chance.
