THE PUSSIES WILL GRAB BACK
Exhibition
ON SPACE WIEN / Experimentalraum für Wissenschaft und Kunst Volkertstraße 17, 1020 Wien
9.—25.10.2025
Artists: ONA B.
The series “The Coup of the Impaccable Women on Labor Day,” which ONA B. created in 2017 as a commentary on the election of the forty-fifth president of the United States, proved to be topical once again in 2025. Using photography, collage, overpainting, and language displacement, the artist processes political power structures, questions of gender, and popular culture. The images take on their current meaning through reflection on the situation in the US and other countries whose democracy is threatened. The works are based on motifs from cinema advertisements from the 1970s and 1980s. In addition to her own family’s history in surviving the monarchy and Nazism, ONA B.’s approach is based on questioning cultural and political phenomena. The artist replaces the stars with her own portrait, shouldering the responsibility as a witness of history for her deceased family members. In this way, she continues their narrative, an endeavor that resulted in her “Impaccable Women’s March—New York” in 2018, which she will present in Vienna in 2025 for topical reasons.
