Marianne Strobls Fotokampagnen
Exhibition
Photoinstitut Bonartes Seilerstätte 22, 1010 Wien
13.8.—21.11.2025
Artists: Strobl Marianne
Curator: Monika Faber, Martin Keckeis
Marianne Strobl, who was specialized in industrial and flash photography, was an exception to the rule in the photography sector around 1900. She documented work processes in marble quarries and on construction sites using reinforced concrete and also photographed the Viennese Men’s Home and glamorous hotels.
Following her rediscovery in an initial exhibition in 2017, the Photoinstitut Bonartes now presents photographs that were not known at the time and illustrate Strobl’s unique collaboration with various clients to promote new technology and advertise progressive ideas in the building industry, municipal infrastructure, and hospitality industry. Using her photographs for the most part, institutions published their activities: the Imperial Royal Museum of Art and Industry (now called MAK) published its presentations of current interior designs, the City of Vienna promoted the construction of the gas works and the new public water system, and famous building companies such as Pittel & Brausewetter and Porr illustrated their advertisement brochures. She photographed all of the ships of the Danube Steamboat Company. Hotelier Viktor Silberer commissioned her to photograph restaurants that were decorated in a historicizing style. Architect Oskar Strnad had her take pictures of his modern interior designs, and Alban Berg had her photograph his family at home. These photographs were kept in luxuriously designed albums, printed in books and magazines, and sold as postcards.
