The Studio as a Scene: Performative and Archival Strategies in Photography and Space
Exhibition
WEST Augasse 2-6 / 1. Stock, B1.10.25, 1090 Wien
16.—18.10.2025
Artists: Hatwagner Sophia, Kunyik Hannahlisa
Over the course of three days, Hannahlisa Hatwagner and Sophia Kunyik link performative stagings with archival ways of playing. Both artists investigate the display of processes of artistic production as well as mechanisms of ascribing meaning in an institutional context. They pose questions on space and subject, with photography serving them as a translator of various states and as a time capsule for an audience of the future.

Kunyik uses artistic institutions and architecture as the backdrop for her ongoing series “Self-Portrait at . . . ,” illustrating the meanings of the image as an artist in a playful and analytic manner as well as the rules of dominance and representation, particularly in the artistic field. She has worked with photographer Carolina Frank up to this point to create her conceptual photo performances,

Hatwagner investigates the dialectics of storing and revealing. She stages the studio as a storehouse in which she archives works and recontextualizes them. Her assemblages and cyanotypes reflect the materiality and immateriality of artistic values. In her installation of archive material, she reveals artistic mechanisms and allows social and political spaces to merge.

In the shared processual setting, Hatwagner and Kunyik use the studio as a stage set and make it visible as a place of production.
