Akatalepsia
Exhibition
Galerie ARTECONT Opernring 21, 1010 Wien
8.—31.10.2025
Artists: Hammerstiel Robert F.
Curator: Chiara Gabrielli
Robert F. Hammerstiel’s series Akatalepsia engages with the limitations of human cognition and the impossibility of fully grasping the essence of existence. This condition leaves human beings in a state of uncertainty. Their exposure to a world they cannot truly comprehend, their fear of the unknown, their insecurity, and the creation of substitute realities—addressed in other series—are themes Hammerstiel has long explored.
In the photographic series Dark Picnic, figures lie on the ground in various postures, as if they had just “fallen” into the images. Their situations remain enigmatic: are they alive or dead, are they in distress or at peace? We are denied both the before and the after, granted only a momentary glimpse of the protagonists. The ambiguity surrounding their state underscores the ambivalence of reality itself, reminding us that things are often far less clear-cut than they first appear.
It is precisely twilight that proves apt in evoking this indeterminacy of the world and the precariousness of our existence.
