Exhibition
Josephinum - Medizinhistorisches Museum Wien Währinger Straße 25, 1090 Wien
21.10.2025 — 7.3.2026
Artists: Oláh Stefan, Riedler Reiner
Curator: Robert Kotasek
On the occasion of the 240th anniversary of the Josephinum, the photography exhibition traces the development of the expansive Viennese medical district founded by Joseph II, which includes both the Josephinum and the General Hospital (AKH). The exhibition explores how these buildings responded to medical and technological progress while simultaneously spurring architectural innovation. At its core is the influence of scientific developments on hospital architecture, from the era of Classicism to modern construction forms.

Historical photographs and contemporary images—by artists such as Margherita Spiluttini, Stefan Oláh, and Reiner Riedler—illustrate both the architectural transformations and everyday life within the hospital. The accompanying program, featuring guided tours, lectures, and a city tour of Vienna’s medical buildings, complements the exhibition. Special attention is given to the Josephinum’s evolution as a training institution, as well as to the “New Clinics” of the AKH, whose generous architecture has set modern standards for generations to come.
