Exhibition
sehsaal Zentagasse 38, 1050 Wien
13.—19.10.2025
Artists: Friedel Martha Frieda
While a photographer brings a selected impression of the world into the photographic image—leaving the viewers with a single view—sculpture expects its beholders to move, with the object of contemplation remaining motionless. Friedel’s ongoing work “Basin” continues the investigation that began with the “Eclat” series and is dedicated to the origin of the portrait in sculpture. In a media-reflective examination, Friedel contrasts sculpture and portrait photography, before combining the two as a photographic series. Friedel recreates sculptural busts in photographs and examines the multifaceted physiognomies of different people from various perspectives. What is the strength of a portrait? What happens within the medially limited scope of a portrait?
