Darkroom Dialogues
Exhibition
Mz* Baltazar`s Laboratory Jägerstraße 52-54, 1200 Wien
24.—31.10.2025
Artists: Futterlieb Corinne, Rohrauer Claudia
Corinne Futterlieb (CH) and Claudia Rohrauer (AT) investigate the essence of analog photography by exploring the chemical and physical fundamentals of analog processes and their materiality. The project addresses working in the darkroom and the practical knowledge that is based on personal involvement in the process cycle. Fleeting moments of understanding that take place there are visualized through texts, images, and sounds. The darkroom as the “black box of photography” becomes immersive in terms of space and media, and the artists appear as performative lab technicians. The mystifying concept of “experiencing in the darkness of the laboratory” finds an artistic form and is accessible from the outside. They focus on searching for the essence of photography, which appears in the dialogue between material, chemistry, and processing and undermines the definition of photography as a medium of representation and reproducibility. Reactions in film material and chemistry are provoked more than they are produced, and ultimately these become images that do not seem to illustrate. The process is the motif.
