Fallacy, Fantasy: The Myth of Fabricated Beauty
Exhibition
Haus der Fotografie Wien – FotoSecession Rechte Wienzeile 85, 1050 Wien
1.—20.10.2025
Artists: Gao Xiuli (Kristina)
Xiuli Gao: „This project is conducted as a catharsis of my inner struggle with the perfection of bodily image, which has troubled me for years. Disembodied parts of my own body are represented, juxtaposed with fragmented pieces of objects—petals of withered flowers, drying and rotten fruits and peel, fallen leaves, etc. The images of still life and my body are further intermingled with handwritten texts in my mother tongue, accompanied by the English version. These naturally flowing conversations I held with myself reflect my innermost fears and concerns, the vulnerability that have not been spoken of, and, meanwhile, the exploration along the way. Reaching toward the end of the journey, I had a reconciliation with myself.
Being written in my personal tone does not mean this project is not aimed at the public; on the very contrary, it touches upon the controversial issues centering around the ideal of feminine beauty. The approaches I have taken in my project, which are more metaphorical and allusive, are distinguished from the existing works about body image.”
