Fritz Simak: Photographs in the Key of Life
Exhibition
AnzenbergerGallery Absberggasse 27, 1100 Wien
25.9.—21.11.2025
Artists: Simak Fritz
Curator: Regina Anzenberger
Starting in 1972, before he had even turned twenty, Fritz Simak created radical photographs that made him into a pioneer of conceptual photography. For this, “he deserves to be recognized as a central figure of this period” (Peter Weibel). He found his motifs in his direct surroundings: in the rural environment of his childhood, in Viennese cafés, in architecture and art, in the flickering televisions that were so common at that time. The multipart, complex tableaux “Doppler” and “Testbild” (Test Screen) (both from 1973) have long been considered pioneering works, although they were not published at the time of their creation.

The material that Simak works with, however, is not reality that is captured by a camera but the light from which the images are distilled. His photographs tell of a relationship to the world that opens up new points of access to the viewer. Examples of them are represented in the exhibition with large-format compositions from the 1990s and the nocturnal works of the wall in Schönbrunn from 2010. Ernst Haas—the subject of Simak’s dissertation, which was the first dissertation at the University of Vienna to ever examine a subject of contemporary photography—said of Fritz Simak’s work: “his pictures are full of music.”
