future perfect: somewhere else
Exhibition
alles ist eytel - atelier für photographie Seilerstätte 2, 1010 Wien
3.10.—1.11.2025
Artists: Feichtinger Kathrin
Every photograph is based on another place and another time, from the moment the picture is taken. This project makes this tangible—which explains the “future perfect” in the title. The project describes the prematurity of an action in the future; more specifically, it describes the first of two actions. Black-and-white and color photographs that were taken with an analog medium-format camera in Sydney and Auckland in 2019 are shown. After failing to have the film developed in Australia, the hidden pictures were taken all the way to Vienna, where the roll of film was forgotten. When it was finally developed in 2025, the film showed traces of its long journey. These visible defects led to the idea of reworking them with analog means, as was common in early photographs. Analog and digital processes illustrate the different layers of time. The history of every photograph goes through multiple phases of time, and the anachronistic technique of hand-coloring emphasizes the past that was once the future. In addition, the simultaneity of analog and digital processes refers to the future, where limitation and techniques will be more permeable.
