Endangered Plant Species in Austria
Exhibition
Botanischer Garten der Universität Wien Rennweg 14, 1030 Wien
1.11.2025 — 30.4.2026
Artists: Eberwein Roland, Hromniak Rudolf, Knickmann Barbara, Münch Michael, Pagitz Konrad, Rasan Leonid, Scherer L., Weinzettl Josef
Curator: Barbara Knickmann
As an important interface between research and nature conservation, botanical gardens are engaged in taking measures to protect species both in their own facilities and outdoors. In a joint project, five botanical gardens are collecting seeds of around fifty protected Austrian species, depositing seed backups in seed banks and growing them in their gardens. The seedlings are then planted in their original habitats in collaboration with authorities, landowners, and landscape conservationists to ensure that these endangered species do not go extinct.
The photography exhibition along the main avenue of the Botanical Garden of the University of Vienna presents selected plant species from the conservation project to highlight their beauty and vulnerability.
