Hanne Darboven, Julia Gaisbacher. Counted Hours
Exhibition
Crone Wien Getreidemarkt 14, 1010 Wien
17.10.—22.11.2025
Artists: Darboven Hanne, Gaisbacher Julia
For her latest long-term project, photo and video artist Julia Gaisbacher spent several weeks in the former studio rooms of legendary Conceptual artist Hanne Darboven, which have remained unchanged since her death in 2009. In the exhibition, the sensitive black-and-white photographs she took are juxtaposed with large-format works by Darboven, in which she herself worked with the medium of photography.

Hanne Darboven (1941–2009) was one of the most important representatives of Conceptual art. She dedicated a large part of her work to the visualization of time. As early as the 1960s, she began developing a number and coding system with which she reorganized hours, days, months, years, and entire epochs.

The working method of Julia Gaisbacher (b. 1983) is based on extensive long-term observations with the aim of photographically tracking down and recording the connections between architecture and society. Her works defy any attempt at a classic narrative. Instead, they aim to make the stories behind the stories tangible.

In Counted Hours, Gaisbacher embarks on a search for the “present absentee” and encounters the force of the complex.
