INSOMNIA 2.0_THINGS THINK DATA DEMONS
Exhibition
Medienwerkstatt Neubaugasse 40a, 1070 Wien
10.—31.10.2025
Artists: Watzinger Anna
Anna Watzinger’s “INSOMNIA 2.0_,” presented at the Medienwerkstatt in October 2025, addresses “dynamic futures” in many ways, some of which are literal. The body of the user reclined on the bed experiences the artist’s sleeping quality (sleeping phases translation in the bedframe motors) via somatosensory stimuli (body VR). Turbo digitalization makes it possible to transfer all human basic needs to the “2.0 minimal living mode” (digital state, social media, delivery drones, AI medicine, cybersex, streaming/gaming/traveling—all with VR visuals). Digital space expands successively into infinity, while analog, physical space (for maneuvering) shrinks/condenses to the smallest necessary (body) size of a bed as a penultimate consequence—the final would be a neuron upload. The bed serves as an island that anchors the body in the sea of digital data.
The seven-minute “arousal” of the bed is exposed in full size on a wall in the exhibition space using the technique of cyanotype. This photographic shadow possibly associates metaphysical aspects of INSOMNIA 2.0_: DEMONS, surveillance, AI dystopias, the unconscious, nightmares, sleep, and insomnia.
