Lisette Model (1901–1983), who is considered one of the most influential women photographers of the twentieth century, was born into a Jewish family in Vienna. The ALBERINA exhibition is a comprehensive retrospective of her most important series from 1933 to 1957. In addition to iconic works such as “Coney Island Bather” and “Café Metropole,” it includes less frequently shown works.

After emigrating to New York in 1938, Model quickly became rose to prominence through her photographs showing facets of urban life for magazines such as “Harper’s Bazaar”: the poverty of the Lower East Side, the pleasures of the upper class, and nightlife in bars and jazz clubs. During the McCarthy era, Model became an influential teacher. Moreover, the exhibition includes for the first time the original design of her 1979 monograph, a classic of photobook history.
