The long-term project “Meet Bob” by photographer Jasper Doest is one that deals with the fragility of our ecosystem. By choosing a flamingo named Bob as his protagonist, the photographer explores how environmental photography could serve as a pioneer for a brighter future as Bob manages to transform the everyday into something extraordinary.
For Doest, the unique story of Bob—a flamingo who lives with the artist’s cousin, Odette Doest, on the Caribbean island of Curaçao—has become a ray of hope to connect the environmental issues of the future with the past and present. The dramatic encounter with a window of the Hilton Hotel on Curaçao had left the flamingo with permanent injuries, which meant that he could not return to the wild. He became an ambassador for Odette’s NGO, which focuses on wildlife rehabilitation and raising awareness of environmental challenges.
