Misfits
Exhibition
Zeller van Almsick Franz-Josefs-Kai 3 Suite 16, 1010 Wien
15.10.—29.11.2025
Artists: Walkowiak Kay
Curator: Zeller van Almsick
The conceptual core and starting point for the exhibition is the photographic series “Misfits” (2024), which radically challenges Western ideologies of time and progress: Kay Walkowiak selected significant objects from the Musée national d’archéologie, d’histoire et d’Art—MNAHA’s ceramic art collection, with a view to highlighting new connections between seemingly unconnected elements in his artistic production. On each of the motifs, an extraordinary stacking of objects in a state of fragile balance is staged and depicted. Contrary to what might have been expected, the photographic montages are not meant to conceal their “flaws” in perspective, thereby revealing Western practices of modernity and the present as an extremely precarious, deeply fragile condition. The boundaries between history, science, and speculative fiction are blurred, addressing the issues of selected cultural representation, the historical canon of artifacts, and their societal legitimacy in times when artificial intelligence has the ability not only to change existing narratives but also to create totally new, speculative worlds.
