The medium of photography has experienced great changes. Not only did digital cameras transform the process; they also made it easier for many people to take pictures. But the real game changer was the invention of the smartphone. How do photo artists approach smartphone images, and how do they use them on social media? These are some of the questions that we will examine at FOTO WIEN 2025 in this exhibition that was organized by the department of audiovisual media. Our approach is pseudoscientific and empirical. What can we learn from smartphones? Are they a tool, a parallel world of “serious photography,” a game, or a means of self-promotion? This group show has received support from cultural scholars, ethnologists, and curators. According to Dr. Alexa Färber, “This exhibition reveals different ways of working in visual and spatial terms. It also reflects an individual appraisal of photography that involves temporal, site-specific, imaginative, and subjective dimensions.”
