Exhibition
Museum Nordwestbahnhof Nordwestbahnhstraße 16a, 1200 Wien
9.10.—6.11.2025
Artists: Mavric Christopher
Curator: Michael Hieslmair, Michael Zinganel, Tracing Spaces
When the 150-year old cargo train station in Vienna’s 20th district known as Nordwestbahnhof ended its operations in 2018, it was already clear that this vast space of almost half a square kilometer in area would soon be used for future homes and working places for more than sixteen thousand people by 2024.
It took longer than expected to even begin with the dismantling of the remaining buildings, which by now is in its full course. What happens when a whole train station moves out? What about the thousands of tons of bits and pieces, walls, bricks, railroad tracks, cranes, cables, and containers that formed this place. Who are the people who worked here and who are the workers who come here to take this place apart? Which parts will be designated to stay here to remind of its history? What other parts will be going onto a long journey to start a new life as a future road or parts of a new building? We follow the transition of a train station to a large-scale construction site with its own recycling hub that once again connects places and people throughout Europe but in a different way. The photographs and videos shown are both analog and digital, just like their subjects, which consist of many different materials.
