Here and Now, There and Then
Exhibition
flat1_artspace Radetzkystraße 4, 1030 Wien
3.—10.10.2025
Artists: Hofer Herbert, Pfeifer Karin Maria, Zimmerberger Sula
Curator: flat1_artspace
Fear of the imminent occurs when a society projects current instabilities onto the future without reflection. The tension caused by current crises of the here and now is discharged in a way that threatens democracy in the “there and then,” especially when innovative technologies are a source of frustration, from AI to the energy transition to Starlink. To prevent fears from overtaking fantasies and blockages from overtaking possibilities, art attempts to determine where we stand. Pfeifer presents photographs inspired by electronic preview images from when transferred image files are depicted as diffuse placeholders when the internet connection is lost. Hofer’s image manipulations suggest technological processes and their impact on humans: crushed, inverted into the negative, or placed against a wall. Zimmerberger derives a message for the future from his look at the past: through unfocused superimpositions, historical statues take on a new complexity. The ground under our feet will not be stabilized until philosophy, media, or art allow us to recognize where the problems are and show us that fear of the future should motivate us to shape it instead of preventing us from doing so.
