The stories that matter: the World Press Photo Contest honors outstanding work in the field of photojournalism once a year. The exhibition that results from the competition is seen by more than three million people on its journey around the globe and stops off at WestLicht in autumn. Following a reorganization in 2022, the exhibition has become more global and diverse, focusing more on regional voices and current narrative forms, and, in addition to the dominant topics, it takes a look at events that otherwise rarely make it into the domestic media. In a political climate in which autocratic governments are increasingly bold in staging fake news and populist messages to suit their tastes, thereby putting independent journalism and democracy at risk, the World Press Photo exhibition—now in its seventieth year—is more relevant than ever: it offers guidance in times of increasing disinformation, makes abstract news visually tangible and reminds us why quality journalism is essential for a democratic future.
